Gifts for the girl who has everything
Some people are harder to shop for than others. They already seem to have everything, refuse to drop hints, and their taste is impossible to predict. Guesswork won’t be good enough if you want to find a gift that they’ll genuinely love. Our best advice is to leave practicality at the door (usefulness has no place at Christmas anyway) and give them something indulgent, something that they would never justify buying for themselves.
Jewellery, accessories and beauty are always a good place to start so, with this in mind, we’ve pulled together a very stylish wish list of last-minute ideas. Whether you need a bright stocking-filler or something seriously luxe, they’re all shoppable online and will make even the trickiest friends and family members feel spoilt this Christmas.
Gift Box, Charlotte Tilbury
Charlotte Tilbury does a legendary smoky eye, and this year the make–up artist finally launched her own line of products. The highly anticipated collection has been expanded for Christmas, with gift sets that offer a complete look for Vintage Vamps, Rock Chicks or Sophisticates. Each one comes in a kiss-print make–up bag with helpful instructions from Tilbury. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to the full set then an eyeliner or lipstick will still be suitably special.
Panama Notebooks, Smythson
When it comes to leather goods for organised types, Smythson is the place to go. It’s best known for tasteful travel wallets and classic diaries (a thoughtful gift for parents, if you’re struggling to come up with ideas for them too) but it’s these textured notebooks that have caught our eye. They have all the timeless details that you would expect from Smythson, with lined pages and a grosgrain ribbon place mark, but their tongue-in-cheek inscriptions set them apart. A stack of these would make an ideal gift for anyone who’s forever scribbling down bright ideas or endless lists.
Rocco Tote, Alexander Wang
Alexander Wang bags just keep getting better, reappearing in a handful of new colours every season. This powder blue version of the Rocco tote reminds us why Wang is the master of understated cool: its metallic studs toughen up this season’s pastels and make them feel exciting again. Perfect for girls who take style seriously (and are worth splashing out on), you can expect screams of disbelief, and to remain their favourite person for all of next year.
Kissing Swallow Bangle, Goodnight Macaroon
If you’re going to give jewellery, make it special. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to cost the earth, but step away from the brands that they always go for and choose something that feels more personal. This 14k gold–plated bangle will indulge their inner bohemian but still looks polished. And because it’s so slender they can easily mix it in with the jewellery that they already wear.
Tiger Ring, Kenzo. Available from Harvey Nichols
Anyone who’s big into trends probably has a crush on the Kenzo tiger. But if they already have the sweatshirt, or it’s slightly out of their price range, this ring is a little taste of the trend. The pinkish tone of rose gold does nothing to soften the tiger’s graphic punch so if the bangle, above, is too girly than this should be top of the list for friends with more androgynous, fashion-forward taste. There’s also a statement bracelet with the same tiger head if they’re not much of a ring–wearer.
Lomography La Sardina Camera. Available from ASOS
Instagram has turned even the most amateur of photographers into vintage filter obsessives, so let them take it to the next level with a Lomography camera. ASOS and Urban Outfitters both stock a good selection of fisheye or extra flash models, complete with light leaks and saturated colours, but we’ve gone for this one because of its jaunty stripes. Wrap it up with a few rolls of film, and let them relive that old-school thrill of actually waiting for photographs to develop. Much more authentic than an iPhone Polaroid.
Gold Layla Headphones, Frends
Tech accessories – from iPad cases to laptop bags – have made the move from practical essential to stylish accessory, and Frends is our go-to label. These headphones are feminine but urban, pairing cool white leather with glossy gold details. If you’re shopping for a stylish music fanatic, or someone who already has a statement phone case, you can confidently treat them to a pair of these.
The Granny Alphabet, Tim Walker. Available from Amazon
Tim Walker is one of fashion’s legendary photographers, creating fantastical editorials for Vogue and W Magazine. His latest book, The Granny Alphabet, was released last month and applies that signature flamboyance to a surprisingly spirited set of grandmothers. Forget well-behaved characters with Mary Poppins handbags; Walker’s grannies wear tartan capes and zoom off to Mars on a moment’s notice. A sweet gift for anyone with an arty, quirky side.
Le Vernis Nail Colour in Black Pearl and Rouge Noir, Chanel. Available from Saks Fifth Avenue
Anyone with a passing interest in fashion is going to appreciate Chanel. They’ll also know that the fashion house always offers up the most desirable shades of the season. For Autumn/Winter 2013 that meant the smoky, shimmery Black Pearl: a metallic shade of black that’s Christmassy without being predictable. Pair it with a more classic shade, such as the cult favourite Rouge Noir, for a gift that will please even the most discerning beauty junkie.
