I think it was the time I basically got body-slammed by my boyfriend in the middle of the night that I decided we needed a new mattress. We were planning on moving in together in a couple of weeks and his queen mattress at the time was just NOT doing it for me. I needed my beauty sleep, ya’ll!
Plus, his mattress was starting to sink in the middle, so even if I tried to roll over to the side of the bed, I got rolled right back into the middle (AKA the DANGER ZONE). I felt like I was clinging onto the edge of a cliff all night.
All I wanted was to be able to go into my separate side of the bed and have a luscious night’s sleep with no rogue punches to the face or unexpected body slams. Is that too much to ask for?!?!
THE MATTRESS SEARCH ENSUES
So, I started our new mattress search. The last mattress I purchased was from an actual mattress store, and let’s be honest, I was not about to do that again.
Number one: I’m lazy.
Number two: I’m a millennial, so I buy everything online.
BUT, the problem with buying a mattress online is you don’t really know what it feels like before you commit to ordering it. Like, how do you even return a mattress? Thinking about the logistics of that actually makes me want to cry inside.
I just want a mattress that comes to me in a little box that expands when you open it and is perfectly comfortable and that I can sleep like an angel on. Is that too much to ask for?!
Apparently not, actually. There are a bunch of companies that send you mattresses in a box!! They expand to full-size once you open them. Now that’s what I call convenient.
The sleeping like an angel part is a little bit harder. I was able to narrow my search down to three top-performing mattress-in-a-box brands, all with great reviews.
AND THE WINNER IS…TUFT & NEEDLE
I ultimately went with Tuft & Needle because it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than Casper, but had the same level of amazing reviews across a couple different reputable websites.
Plus, they advertised their mattresses as “soft without the sink,” which was pretty much EXACTLY the pain point I was experiencing with our current mattress (brand shall not be named, but is one of those out-of-the-box mattresses).
Tuft & Needle was generous enough to gift us the King-sized mattress ($850) for our new apartment in exchange for an honest review.
And…here’s my honest review:
WE LOVE IT.
I slept on it alone the first night while my boyfriend was away and I think I feel asleep in .5 seconds (usually it takes me an hour to fall asleep). I woke up feeling…NOT TIRED. This was new.
I was nervous for my boyfriend to try it, because if it hurt his back then it would be going bye-bye.
My boyfriend’s back hurts from 98% of the mattresses we sleep on when we go to hotels, even when I sleep like a baby.
Well…
There’s a happy ending to this story. It didn’t hurt his back…and he actually thinks it’s comfortable.
I was literally so relieved to hear him say this because until I experienced this mattress, I actually didn’t know that the mattress I slept on mattered or affected my sleep at all. I kind of always thought that was BS.
But, no. I can assure you that it is NOT BS.
This mattress has saved my nights, my days (not tired anymore!), and my face (no night punches!). I sleep through the night regularly, which is pretty much unheard of for me, especially with my boyfriend who is a very “active” sleeper.
I used to bounce around all night every time he rolled over or changed position. Now, I don’t even feel it when he moves.
A better sleep also means I can function better during the day and get more done. I’m in a better mood, I feel more energized and ready to take on the day, and I don’t have a sore back or neck.
So, if you’re in the market for an affordable, comfortable-for-every-kind-of-sleeper mattress, I would HIGHLY recommend Tuft & Needle.
It’s been two months sleeping on this mattress and it hasn’t sunk or changed in structure at all. Even if it does, it comes with a 10-year warranty, so I’m not really all that worried.
